Guided by the young artist Kerri Meehan I drifted through the maze of experimentation and immense institution of human thought that is St Martins. By chance, passing through a block named D3. Hanging in the corner of the corner of the building was the intensely eerie Randy. What was immediately impacting for me was not necessarily the photo-realistic technique but the visceral air surrounding the figure, almost like the atmosphere of that person, made visible.
What I am beginning to understand more and more about own artistic taste in all mediums, is that I am totally in awe of an artist’s ability to truly capture another human being from the complete immersion of Daniel Day-Lewis to David Matthew’s musical representation of my father. If an artist penetrates the core of another’s soul and is able to communicate that with whatever skill they posses, it’s like I am seeing why we are put here on this earth and through that an almost religious experience. Not in any literal sense, but a feeling distinctly human, an understanding of what we are, that no other species no matter how advanced could ever understand.
I Chose Johan Andersson as our emerging artist for this quarter because I believe he shows a unique potential to develop into an artist that will bring a feeling like this to the world in the years to come.
The presence of these pictures is not captured in these reproductions but they certainly do have a physical presence. What we see here is not a whole artist or fully developed paintings, but the beginning of an incredible journey ahead. This is what I will attempt to do with this section, present the very best of what is to come.
